Let’s Celebrate World Wildlife Day 2024: Embracing Digital Innovations for Conservation
Imagine a day when the world comes together to celebrate the wonders of our planet’s wildlife. That’s exactly what happens every year on March 3rd, known as United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD). Back in December 2013, during the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), this special day was declared, honoring the signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973. Since then, it’s become a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.
Our lives are intertwined with the natural world in countless ways. Whether it’s the food we eat, the medicine we use, or the clothes we wear, we depend on wildlife and biodiversity for our very existence. That’s why it’s crucial to ensure that ecosystems thrive and plant and animal species continue to flourish for generations to come. So, let’s take a moment to appreciate the beauty and importance of wildlife, and celebrate the tireless efforts of conservationists around the world!
“Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation”
This year, World Wildlife Day 2024 is all about embracing digital innovation in wildlife conservation. From cutting-edge tracking devices to advanced DNA analysis techniques, technology is revolutionizing the way we protect and preserve wildlife. Despite the global digital revolution, around 2.7 billion people still lack internet access, with women and young people being disproportionately affected.
While technological innovation has made many aspects of wildlife conservation easier and more efficient, there are still challenges to overcome. Issues like environmental pollution and unequal access to digital resources remain significant barriers to achieving universal digital inclusion by 2030.
But there’s hope. World Wildlife Day 2024 is a platform for people of all ages to come together and explore the opportunities and challenges of digital innovation in conservation.
This year, the CITES Secretariat has joined forces with the United Nations Development Programme, WILDLABS, Jackson Wild, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to amplify the impact of World Wildlife Day.
